Links to stories in the Unpleasantville project
This is Unpleasantville.
Our population must stay the same, 666,000. If you visit here, someone else has to die. Or you do.
And yet, something draws people here despite the dank lake whose mirrored surface reflects clouds that claw their way across the dark sky; despite the witches, burned to death so long ago, and yet still so present; despite the StayIn Motel that is anything but welcoming.
This is Unpleasantville.
We never say welcome. Oh, we know of hospitality, but we focus on the “hospital” in hospitality.
Our hospitals are not places of healing; they are places for stealing—youth, vitality, souls…
No, we are not a welcoming bunch. Just ask the witches who were burned in our town square so many centuries ago—they are still among us, their evil touches our lives and their stories will be told soon. Ask those who drink the dank waters of the lake—some intentionally, most not—whose spirits float on the surface like steam on a cool morning.
Well, there is one welcoming spot in Unpleasantville. The monolith, dark and looming, that spews shadows. It will not reveal its secrets to you, but its congregants will embrace you, lead you to a “life” you never expected.
Yes, this is Unpleasantville.
Here our stories.
